OUR STORY
Our story started with a viewing of the documentary “2040” by filmmaker Damon Garneau who travels the world to find innovative approaches to tackle the issue of climate change. It demanded a personal response. This also coincided with a timely reminder of how important local and community were throughout the coronavirus lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. The result was RENEW Malmesbury CIC which seeks to involve our community in an exciting environmental project though which we can learn and develop further initiatives.
We are keen to answer the question “What happens to all the things we recycle?” by showcasing recycled and sustainably produced gifts and crafts in our retail space. We believe we can change a bit of ourselves and the world through our purchasing choices. But we also want to rediscover old skills, develop new skills and knowledge and forge friendships through our course programme. To bring us really up to date we have a hot desk area to ease the loneliness and difficulties of home working and a green print room to continue to be able to offer community groups and individuals quick print environmentally friendly facilities.
WHO ARE WE ?
A steering committee quickly formed round the idea of RENEW and we now have 12 individuals involved with a good mix of ages and skills. We are now looking for new volunteers and have a range of opportunities to contribute. The project has three directors with financial and overall responsibility.
WHERE are WE?
The project hopes to open its doors in December 2021 . We will be based at 24 High Street in the old Workbox premises – next to Hyams. We are working really hard to develop the retail offer and create a unique and interesting shop. Our initial course programme will soon be available and a gift voucher for one of them will make a lovely Christmas present ! In January, 2022 we will make the hot desk area and the green print room available to use. We are now recruiting a shop manager to cover three days a week and widening our team of volunteers to undertake the many tasks needed to make the project a success.
ABOUT THE MONEY?
Renew Malmesbury CIC is a not for profit project with any surplus being reinvested to make the business better. Our ultimate aim is to be able to offer financial support to other environmental initiatives in Malmesbury. We have been fortunate to attract some grant funding and we will hopefully hear some good news about outstanding funding applications soon. We plan to be financially independent by the end of year 1.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
We would welcome approaches to join our steering committee and to volunteer for a wide range of roles from serving in the shop, stocktaking and displays, running or hosting or courses, being involved in developing the print room, creating a beautiful space in the courtyard, looking after our small refreshment point and helping us develop community coffee mornings. All ideas and contributions are really welcome. Do get in touch with us by
e mail : admin@renewmalmesbury.com or by dropping into our shop when we open in December.
